Snow and weather reports posted on Sunday 26th May 2019

Cloud and rain for the day yesterday here and this morning for now it is just cloudy but rain on and off is what the forecast is telling us to expect today.
It was relatively mild last night with a low of about 5 degrees in town and it's not much higher than that now as of 8am. Temperatures will rise to around 9 degrees in town later on this afternoon.
We have better visibility this morning so can see that the top areas of the mountains have a dusting of white up there.
Kagura are reporting 5cm of fresh snowfall since yesterday in upper areas.
On the subject of Kagura, yesterday they decided that from today (Saturday) they are going to get their Kagura Number 1 quad lift moving as well as opening part of the Kagura Park ('jib items only'!) from the afternoon. So the main course at Kagura should be open this morning (1500m in length) and while I expect cover the snow isn't 'Kagura deep' yet. The Mitsumata area remains a connecting course to get to Kagura.
Forecast is unfortunately still looking like from tomorrow starting to clear up and during the week sun and warmer conditions. The signs are that we are going to have to wait a bit longer for that first decent snowfall here in town.
We have quite a lot of people emailing SnowJapan asking us if there'll be any resorts open on particular dates. If only we knew the answers! All I can suggest is that you keep an eye on our reports as well as the forecast, and to get an idea of how previous seasons have gone read through the archive reports. There's lots of them.
Planned opening dates for resorts in Yuzawa Town and Minamiuonuma City (by date):
Currently part open: The main Kagura course - 1500m in length, real snow (and artificial) - is open. The Mitsumata (snow-mat) area is currently being used as a connection to get to the open Kagura area. Operating lifts are Mitsumata Ropeway, Mitsumata Number 1 lift, Mitsumata Number 3 lift, Kagura Gondola, Kagura Number 1 romance pair lift and the Kagura Number 1 high speed quad. The Kagura Gondola needs to be taken to return back to the Mitsumata area.
On standby to open as soon as there is enough snow: Iwappara Joetsu Kokusai
I need to get myself to Nagano this morning on some urgent business and so unfortunately I am unable to post an in-depth report this morning. My apologies. Below is how things seem to be shaping up early this morning...
Resorts that are part open as of this morning:
- Takamagahara Mammoth - Kumanoyu (more area able to open from today) - Ichinose Family - Yakebitaiyama
I will be going into more detail in my report tomorrow morning. Read more ...

14cm of fresh snow to report to you this morning from my base area here in Hirafu and it feels like a cold wintery morning out there.
I was hoping for more - the news last night was warning us of up to 80cm of snowfall in parts of Hokkaido by the end of today. I do like those warnings, especially when they are right - and perhaps with more snow falling today we'll get bigger numbers. Anyway, it was very windy overnight and still is and this wind means that the snow has been blowing about and been 're-distributed', so in places there's more than that. Certainly expect more accumulated on the mountain. Niseko Grand Hirafu have adjusted their snow depths this morning to 125cm up top and 50cm at base.
From today more of the mountain is going to be open. It is the first day of the season for the Hanazono area, and more lifts and runs at Niseko Grand Hirafu and Niseko Annupuri are going to be open this morning. I have added details, as much as I can get them at the time of writing this report, in the details below. Hopefully wind won't mess around with those plans.
We still have snow forecast for today, tomorrow and hopefully into Monday too.
(Oh yes, and apologies for my mixing up the courses at Village/Annupuri yesterday - by the time you read this that will have been fixed up).
Resort specific news as of 8:30am - subject to change during the day

'Nighta' should be starting on Saturday 12th December 2015
Morning and not a whole lot to report really. Not much was added to what we got yesterday and this morning it is cloudy here in Nozawa. There was even a bit of sun peeking through the clouds before though back to just cloud now. It's not particularly cold and a high of about 6 degrees is expected in the village later.
So as you might expect from that, there is not enough snow to open yet.
I almost don't want to report it but there's not much sign of snow on the weekly forecast either I'm afraid, with clearer skies expected Monday through until around Thursday, so it seems that we are going to need to be more patient for a while longer.
Good morning from Hakuba and there's more snow to report - generally resorts are reporting 15-30cm of snow from lower to upper areas, less than that since my last report at base here.
With this new snowfall there is more terrain and lifts opening up from this morning. I have added the details below under each resort. It's great to see more opening up. Remember - early season things can change quickly so for the very latest if you are going best to check the official resort websites.
We might get more snow down to village today though with temperatures heading to around 5 degrees it might be rain - but probably snow on the mountains. At this moment though there is even a bit of sunshine breaking through the cloud in places.
Unfortunately beyond today we are looking at more settled and fine weather. 'Fine' as in a good chance of sun and clear skies, and that is due to last for most of the week by the looks of things.
Still the season is going and there is snow to play in. Hopefully we'll get winter settle in good and proper soon.
