Yet another beautiful Spring day in Hakuba, with cherries down low and great snow up top. Skiing in the morning, canoeing in the afternoon - life couldn't get much better.
*AVALANCHE DANGER remains MODERATE* As the snow pack becomes more isothermic, we will be seeing avalanches from deeper instabilities. These types of avalanches are much harder to anticipate as it is not just the surface snow that will be sliding. Avalanches can occur from the ground or from old ice layers deep within the snow, as was seen with 3 deaths in Omachi four days ago.
More fine weather today after a good run of sunny days - though more cloud around today and some strongish winds blowing around as we enter the afternoon. Don't be put off by some of the yellowish looking snow in places, it's that sand coming over from China again...
There's a fair few tourists in Shiga Kogen now who have no intention of skiing or snowboarding - they are coming for the fresh air and the fine views. Read more ...
