Cloud, possibly clearing up
There has been no new snow on the mountains overnight and the morning has started cloudy but quite bright. Some forecasts even have the sun due to make an appearance so it might turn out to be a fine day here in the region. Right not it is 4 degrees with a high of around 8 degrees forecast.
It is still looking like it will get colder tomorrow and into the weekend with a chance of some light snow going into the weekend. Bring it on (please!)
Just to re-cap once again planned opening dates in Yuzawa. So this weekend a few resorts hoping to open. Naeba will definitely make the date as they are making snow down on the bottom slopes. The others are questionable as there simply isn't much snow there right now. The next few days will be important but it's not looking likely that we'll get enough. Hopefully, we might be surprised!
Well a nice treat today to wake up to snow on the ground here in Hakuba. Just trace amounts of snow on the cars this morning, but a good sign none the less.
The upper peaks must have got a decent amount and the base is slowly accumulating to something we can slide on soon. The sun was trying to make an appearance early this morning, but the high cloud bank may obscure it all day.
The forecast is calling for quite cold temperatures on Friday so this is good news. If it stays cold and then some precipitation laden low pressure systems roll in we are set.
Might be time to get the wax out, throw on a snow movie and do some squats... Read more ...
Shiga Kogen Now!
Wednesday 7th December 2011, 9:15am
Another frosty kind of start to the day in Shiga Kogen and no new proper cm to report just that light dusting frosty kind of cover. Actually after a day that ended up being mainly just cloudy yesterday, this morning is starting with the sun shining.
We might get a bit of snow tonight and more the night after as temperatures get really cold over the next few days. After that though not a whole lot in terms of snow on the weekly forecast as it stands.
In resort news, Terakoya has started operating it's quad - but it seems that it is not open for general usage until 22nd December (until then it will be open for pole training). The Higashitateyama Gondola is also moving but for the purpose of taking people up to Terakoya - and sightseeing! As such I'll leave that info off the list below for the moment.

Nozawa Onsen Now!
Wednesday 7th December 2011, 9:24am
This morning the top of the mountain looks bright and white with what looks like a new frosting on the trees up there. Further down and nearer the village we can't see much as the lower parts are shrouded in fog/cloud at the moment. My guess is that will fairly quickly burn out and we should be left with a find day here.
Things are looking pretty positive for some possibly decent snowfall on the mountain sometime between tonight and tomorrow night into Friday. After that from Saturday we have another run of probably snow-less days and so the next 36 hours will be really important as to whether the top slopes of the resort can open on Saturday or not. No word from the resort just yet...
It's about 3 degrees at the moment, a high of 5 or 6 is forecast for the day. Read more ...

Cloudy and snowing
The cold temperatures continue in Furano which means the snow is staying in great condition. With most of the Furano Zone now open the skiable terrain is substantial and the mountain remains relatively uncrowded. Today is cloudy and there is some light snowfall at the moment which will leave a nice layer of powder to refresh the slopes for those of you lucky enough to make it up there today. The Prince Romance lift starts operating from today which is an ideal area for beginners. Read more ...

Talcum powder - like snow in the resort this morning, really amazing conditions. With all the reports of lack of snow in the main European resorts and even in other parts of Japan, a day like today is a reminder of how lucky visitor to Niseko are to have such a consistently long season.
Today was the first time the resort felt busy - the car park was full this morning and each day is bringing more and more visitors with next weekend seeing what will probably be the first big spike in numbers of the season.
This Siberian system is due to really kick in over the next few days with very low temperatures around -19C and heavy snows over Saturday, perfect "Powder Factory" conditions. A good guess would be that most if not all of the resort areas can open up for the coming weekend.
As always, early season rules apply when heading off the groomers, take care and enjoy your turns.
Current lift operations at time of writing (subject to change depending on conditions)
Hirafu: Hirafu family pair, Ace Quad, Ace Pair 3 and Hooded pair 3 running
Annupuri: Gondola, jumbo pair and Pair 2 and Annupuri Pair 3 running.
Niseko Village: Banzai and Community chair and Gondola running
Threatening grey skies again today but patches of blue in places. Still reasonably cold and it is looking like snow on the weekend. There is currently 35 cms at Tenjin and the whole resort is looking the right color for a change - it won't take much more before they can open a lift or two. Read more ...
