Weather conditions: Snowing

Sorry about missing the report yesterday but I was over at Rusutsu for the day. It was awesome with blue bird skies and freshies in knee deep powder all day. One of the best days skiing I've ever had.

From what I understand Hirafu only had brief moments of sunshine but also had great powder as there was about 30cm overnight. Last night there was another 10-15cm and it is currently snowing fairly heavily. If this keeps up bottomless skiing should be had across the whole mountain.

Currently things are pretty crowded on the slopes in Hirafu but don't forget there are 3 other areas to access on the all mountain pass. These are Hanazono, Higashiyama and Annupuri. All these areas have great skiing and are generally far less crowded.

Snow is forecast to continue for much of the next week.    Read more ...

Weather conditions: Steady Snowfall

It seems to be promising a clear almost sunny day today, possibly a precursor to tomorrows expected blue sky conditions. Clouds were cutting the mountains this morning with it clear up top and the clouds very low, producing white outs at various levels. Now it seems to have lifted and continuing to lift. Lets hope the clouds clear completely for a while at least. Yamabiko is looking particularly smooth and fluffy this morning.   Read more ...

Hakuba Now!

Saturday 7th January 2006, 9:14am
Weather conditions: Overcast and snowing
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
With the start of the long weekend comes cloudy skies and snow, snow, snow. Word round the village is that the snowfall will continue for the next few days, giving us even more fresh, deep powder all over the mountain. The snow is light, fluffy and falling fast, which means visibility is pretty poor, so for all of you who can get out there: have fun, take care and remember your flat-light lenses.

As with yesterday, there has been rapid settling within the last couple of days in the snow pack. This should help to stabilize the pack but be aware that there are still layers in the upper 70 cm of the pack that will still be sliding. Be careful of the New Years day sun crust as with the low temperatures this will not be breaking up and there is a chance that faceting may be occurring below this crust if low temps persist. Thick wind slab will still be lurking in pockets and chutes, so be very careful in steep terrain especially around rocky outcrops and when moving from thin snow pack areas like wind scoured ridges.

Natural Avalanches possible. Human-triggered avalanches probable.

Unstable slabs probable in steeper terrain.

Be increasingly cautious in steeper terrain. (>30 degree slopes)   Read more ...

Yuzawa Now!

Weather conditions: Sun, cloud

We were expecting some more snow overnight and to wake to snow falling, but at the moment there has been no snowfall and the sun is out?! So it is one of those mornings when the forecast of the previous night was totally incorrect - but for those able to be out on the slopes thats a good thing.

The forecast is still for snow though and so it is reasonable to expect snow to move in later on in the day.

All of Kagura is now back open but they are asking riders to be particularly careful where they go - and not outside of the designated course. Naeba is still waiting to open up a few lifts and the southern area of Gala is still closed.   Read more ...

Shiga Kogen Now!

Weather conditions: Light snow, cloud
New snowfall: --

We were all set for a heavy snow morning but woke up to ---- well, cloud and light snow at times and even the sun appearing for a short while earlier on. It looks like there is a good chance that the snow will move in more with snow forecast for today and tomorrow as well.

It's a 3 day weekend (Monday is a national holiday) and so a fair few people will no doubt be out on the slopes, but at the moment things aren't crowded.   Read more ...
