Hakuba Now!

Sunday 8th January 2006, 8:47am
Weather conditions: Overcast and snowing
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Not much has changed since yesterday - the early morning has seen further cloud cover, slightly increased winds and just a little more snow. And as the last Sunday of the New Year break, we can expect even more people on the slopes than yesterday.

Snow is again falling lightly in the Valley, with about 2cm accummulating by the hour. This is rather slow by recent Hakuba standards, although should allow some nice fresh lines for those of you out early enough. Visibility is still quite poor, and may be limited up top. Watch out for the tourists, and if you're heading off-piste, look out for the 'inoshishi' wild boar, as apparently there were quite a few to be found in the trees yesterday.

As always, play it safe and have fun!

Natural Avalanches possible. Human-triggered avalanches probable.

Unstable slabs probable in steeper terrain.

Be increasingly cautious in steeper terrain. (>30 degree slopes)   Read more ...

Weather conditions: Snow

The snow is here with us this morning and forecast to be falling all day. It's another cold day but only a slight wind at town level.

Things look a little different at Kagura and Naeba though with only partial operation due to strong winds (but they plan to fully open up if conditions improve).

Looking ahead it seems that tomorrow might be fair weather - with even a chance of the sun making an appearance!   Read more ...

Shiga Kogen Now!

Sunday 8th January 2006, 10:37am
Weather conditions: Light snow
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
The snow did continue and is at the moment but it is not that heavy. It is another very cold morning and some fairly strong winds which may cause some lifts to power-down from time to time.

Taking a quick look at the lifts near where I am, not many people out there on the slopes - especially considering we're in the middle of a three-day weekend.   Read more ...

Nozawa Onsen Now!

Sunday 8th January 2006, 11:28am
Weather conditions: Heavy Snowfall
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Very heavy snowfall all morning with winds strong higher up at Yamabiko and very calm down lower. Lots of people about today especially at Hikage beginner area. Clouds are low and visibility is only about 150 meters at best, with white outs here and there high up. There was a prediction that it would clear later this afternoon and there was a very short break of sunshine this morning for about 2 minutes.   Read more ...

Niseko Now!

Sunday 8th January 2006, 14:46pm
Weather conditions: Snowing
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Huge amounts of snow has fallen since yesterday. Snow fell continuously for most of the day and eased a little overnight. Off piste it is bottomless and up around hip deep in places. Light to moderate falls have been continuing throughout today and temperatures are remainning cold.

People should take care off piste as avalanche danger is very high at the moment. Also in many steeper areas around the mountain large crevasses have formed where the whole snowpack has moved right to ground level. Most of these are found off piste and are not marked.

This weekend is a long weekend with a public holiday on Monday and it has been very busy on the mountain today with lift queues particulary at the Hirafu Gondola and Ace #2. This is likely to continue tomorrow and then all the masses should head back to Sapporo.    Read more ...
