Minakami Now!

Saturday 9th February 2008, 8:14am
Weather conditions: Mostly clear sky with some cloud
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
The snow continued for most of the day yesterday with over 50cm accumulating over 1300m. Around midnight the snow stopped to reveal a clear starry night which has produced a thick frost in the valley this morning.

This morning there is blue sky with a few scattered clouds but by the afternoon the snow is expected to return, continuing through to the early hours of tomorrow morning. There is more fine weather forecast for Monday.

Backcountry
Many sluffs were observed yesterday with the new snow not bonding well with the wind slab from last week. Caution is advised in steep terrain. Be wary of terrain traps.

Avalanche Hazard:
Alpine: Considerable
Tree Line: Moderate

Naeba Now!

Saturday 9th February 2008, 8:57am
Weather conditions: blue skies
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
It dropped down to -12 degrees around these parts last night. The cold still lingers this morning as temperatures are lurking down around -6 degrees. The sun is out, we have blue skies and there is a real chilly breeze whistling down the valley.

There was another 15-20cm of snow since yesterdays report, likely a lot more up the top as it really blanketed down for a while yesterday afternoon. Should be good up here this weekend - a lot of powder snow still to be spent up there on the hills, more fresh lines, more drop-ins into powder valleys, bowls and fresh lines, lines lines.   Read more ...

Hakuba Now!

Saturday 9th February 2008, 9:13am
Weather conditions: Cloudy with patches of blue
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
After the wind and cold yesterday it was great to wake up to blue skies. Lots of clouds moving in up there but plenty of sun still breaking through though it's supposed to cloud over bringing snow tonight.

Today is the first day of the Japanese long weekend so things will be busier than usual but there should be delicious groomers to be had by all.

Backcountry Travel Advisory:

Saturday and sunshine will mean a lot of people hiking today. Pick conservative lines and use good group control and safety measures. There are still multiple shear layers in the upper 1 m of the snow pack that may propagate and create avalanches in steep moderate and complicated terrain. Alpine bowls and chutes with big consequences should be avoided or reassessed for stability. Do not get fooled by the Ice Crust of January 12 as it is still a lingering week layer and faceting around this layer is prominent and depth hoar has also been found around this layer in multiple areas. Shear and compression tests have found moderate results on this layer and the shear plane is very clean and could produce problems so do assess stability of this layer before jumping in.

Take due care out there and take mellow lines in simple terrain.

Avalanche Hazard as of Feb 6th:

Alpine: Considerable

Tree line: Considerable

Below Tree Line: Moderate

Furano Now!

Saturday 9th February 2008, 10:16am
Weather conditions: still, blue sky, clear day, chilly morning.
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Conditions on the mountain yesterday were as predicted with a nice amount of fresh snow on the upper mountain which covered old tracks and allowed some great turns. The groomers at the moment are very hard, with the lack of fresh snow over the last few days. Watch out for death cookies in places that have previously been soft, but are now hard chunks of ice.

Cloudy with periods of snow today. Temperatures are a little warmer than usual. The snow on Upper Mountain yesterday was very dry and fluffy, after a few days of a slight crust on the snow.

From Monday we are expecting a huge storm to come in and Wednesday and Thursday it should be accompanied by strong winds.

Tonight is the Cultural Performance in town from 6pm, which is always some good local entertainment.

Nozawa Onsen Now!

Saturday 9th February 2008, 10:44am
Weather conditions: Fine
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
It's cavok (ceiling and visibility okay) in Nozawa today, bright blue skies and the sun is poking its head out. The mountain doesn't look too busy from here, but there have been an awful lot of people walking past on their way up to the mountain. Yesterday was another great powder day, shin-knee deep in places. It only snowed lightly on and off so only minimal fresh stuff today - probably already gone too.

Although its still early February, slightly heavier snow, warmer days and cats doing the wild thing in our carpark have me thinking about the onset of spring. Next week the forecast is for very cold temperatures again and lots of snow, so hopefully those thoughts will be dispelled. More snow is expected tonight too.

We are still waiting for new depths and temperatures from the resort, check back for those later on.

Yuzawa Now!

Saturday 9th February 2008, 13:35pm
Weather conditions: Fine > cloud
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Last night was really cold - getting down to -9 apparently in Yuzawa - and it felt it early on. There was a lot of ice on the roads and it sure was chilly out there. It was also a very nice start to the day with the sun out and just some wispy clouds around and stayed like that until around mid-morning when it some clouds started to move in and it has been cloudy since then. Still fairly bright, and much milder than earlier - it is now around +1 degrees. Higher up on the hills there are some fairly strong winds blowing around at times which we hear is slowing down some lift operations from time to time.

The slopes look fairly busy today (though nothing like what they might have been 10 years ago!) and tomorrow should also be similar.

It looks like we should expect some snow clouds this evening and through the night, probably into tomorrow.   Read more ...

Shiga Kogen Now!

Saturday 9th February 2008, 13:50pm
Weather conditions: Sun > cloud
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Today is the first day of the long weekend and the slopes have a fair few people on them enjoying the snow.

The day started off cold and sunny and there was good weather this morning but since then it has started clouding over somewhat and has taken on a much greyer look early this afternoon... I'd say the forecast snow clouds for this evening might well make their appearence a little earlier by the looks of things.

Night operations at quite a few resorts tonight and probably a fair amount of people going to be out enjoying the snow this evening. Nighta is planned at the following resort areas of Shiga Kogen today:

- Sun Valley
- Maruike
- Mammoth
- Ichinose Family
- Ichinose Diamond
- Yakebitaiyama
- Kumanoyu   Read more ...

Niseko Now!

Saturday 9th February 2008, 17:13pm
Weather conditions: Overcast.
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Just a drop of snow last night, cloudy all day and a slight warming in temperatures. After all the next to perfect days we have had, today was below average. There was very little powder off piste as just about everything has been skied out over the last two days. Riding was nice on the groomed in average light.

There are several forecasts for the coming week. Some are predicting huge snowfalls while others are stating light snow falls. Whatever happens, we will be here to let you know about it.   Read more ...
