My first shinkansen mission was AWESOME!

It took 1 1/2 hours from Tokyo to Yuzawa station and compared to the bus it was BLISS!!

Heard nightmares about crowds here but it simply isnt so. There were quite a few people on piste but the runs are wide enough to be able to bomb down in safety. I hit the singles lane and never had to wait more than 3 minutes for a lift! On a perfet Saturday with the carpark full

After reading the reports on this place I was expecting queues for Africa but it simply ain't the case.

This was a perfect Sunday with no clouds and no wind and the longest I waited for a lift was 3 minutes.

The runs at the top of the hill were narrow and the traverse back from the left side had uphill...the dread of all boarders!! Also the laft side had moguls and bumps all over the runs....definetly best avoided on the snowboards.

Wakabuna Kogen review by horrified
I went mid-week and had many runs completely to myself. It was raining in the morning when I arrived, but the sun came out around lunch time and it turned into a fantastic day. I had a bowl of rammen while waiting for the rain to subside (900 yen for a bowl and not bad.)

The staff were friendly the runs were perfect for me, as I'm a beginner. There were a few advanced runs, but most folks stayed on the

Maiko Snow Resort review by bryantp
6 weeks ago I learned to snowboard here so I really like this place - nostalgia and all.

Conditions were poor this visit and the crowds were worse. Still, the beginner's slope is a great place to practice the fundamentals.

My wife doesn't ski or snowboard but she enjoys the social life in the restaurant here more than most.

Like everyone else, I wish they'd turn off the music

When we went, which was mid-week, there weren't many crowds at all.

The snow was really good after about 20cm the previous evening and all the runs were open. I can see this place getting annoying when its busy because the runs are almost all narrow. But as there weren't that many people around when we went it was cool!

I recommend going on a weekday

Joetsu Kokusai - it has got some stick in some of the reviews on here, but even so I went with an open mind (and a free ticket - thanks SJ!).

First off, the weather today was very spring like - it just felt like spring. I didn't even put my gloves on all day, the winds were warm. The bad part of all that of course is that the snow was not good. Heavy, like sugar.

Great place this.

Not much to complain about!

Great snow when we went early Feb, which always makes a place look good.

Nice long courses so you don't feel you're sat on a lift for most of the day.

And Mt Myoko really is a beaut

We live in Niigata city, so the travel time and expense to get to this resort is a big factor in this review.

My son and I are learning to snowboard, and we found this place nice and inexpensive to do just that. We bought lift punch-cards for only 2800yen/10-pack. That's 280yen per lift. Very nice price.

For beginners, this is maybe not the best place to try to learn, because we found the slopes start off too steep, then flatten

Typical budget Yuzawa resort with well groomed, wide runs. Surprisingly, the number of boarders vs. skiers seemed evenly matched here.

The large number of short lifts for this mountain is most bizzare given the number of courses it has though.

From bottom to top, one must take no less than 5 lifts for a total travel time 30 minutes or longer depending on crowds! Poor lift layout too as you can find yourself having to traverse uphill between lifts.

Yuzawa Park review by denmam
Overall I had fun here, the snow park was great fun - 2 rails and 3 jumps all laid out so you could hit them all. Not much in the off piste area except if you hike up the mountain from the top lifts it's possible to get a short and gnarly run in before you have to worm your way through the trees.

There are a lot of beginers here, and also it's a really great deal as from

This place was great! The dump the night before we went helped too.

The lifts start early 7:30 which makes for some nice early runs.

The placed itself is really wide which makes for a nice variety of scenery. Lots of really nice tree runs and the patrol seem to be very relaxed with going off the courses. We went on a Saturday and it wasn't that busy at all..

Another thing I realy liked about it was the

Awesome place. Slopes not that long but very good fun.

Lots of places off-piste for the adventurous snowboarder.

Towards the bottom, there is a fairly long and winding slope that is absolutely great for the "I feel the need for speed" racing duo snowboarders.... be careful though, this will take you back to the car park and the ropeway. ;-)

And for nonsmokers like myself, there is an excellent "non smoking" eating lodge right next to the main restaurant at the top of
