Maiko Snow Resort review by knightvato
I really like this resort.

The bowl at the top of the gondola area has some decent uncrowded terrain, and the lifts there are quick so you can get a lot of vertical in a day.

There is great potential in this place but for some reason the most desirable spots are roped off.

It can get crowded on the bottom and the night skiing is not great

Naeba is the best resort around here.

It takes about 2 days to cover the whole thing (if you take the "dragondola" to the other side).

The hotel is wonderful and has many rooms, restaurants, a pool, jacuzzi, sauna.

They have cheap packages, especially for weekday travelers. The weather when I was there was great except for about 2 hours when it was cloudy but it cleared up nice and was really nice.

It is

For a quick getaway from Tokyo on a day trip, it's a good bet. A bit crowded on some runs as many of the people there stay "on the course". Not much tree space to play in, most everything is blocked off. It was a beautiful day though, some spring skiing in January!

There's also access to GALA Ski resort via a dual access ski lift. GALA isn't as nice as this place though (In my

Maiko Snow Resort review by greenmachine
The ropeway and top runs were closed when we visited so the chairlift had a 20-30 minute wait. The so called beginner's run near the ropeway is completely flat! Most were taking off skis and boards and walking. Argh! Grrr.

Crossing over to the other side of the resort was time consuming and a little annoying. That side was crowded, the surface old and icy and I didn't like it.

On the other hand, after 5, most people head home. While we

I like ishiuchi. The top 'street' gets crowded but there are plenty of places to peel of and head onto trails. Loads of lifts. Quite busy but no waiting. I went there for the day and really enjoyed it. A colorful place.

There is a nice beginner platter at the bottom

Mikawa Onsen review by wildebeast
Went up during night time, 5pm-9pm. Good place to take beginners or to goto right after work. No waiting in the lift lines. Only 2 slopes open at night so things can get boring very quickly.

I like to go here with friends who are beginners or to test out new equipment

GALA Yuzawa review by jaclynanne
Had a good half day at Gala today - we had beautiful weather compared with yesterday.

Could see all the surrounding mountains. Really enjoyed the red runs- they were perfectly my level. We did almost every run on at Gala except the "gray" advanced stuff and had a good time. Apart from the actual skiing Gala was annoyingly pricey: 1000 yen for a locker, 1300 yen for onsen, 300 yen for a small coke at the

Iwappara review by jaclynanne
As intermediate skiiers we were all pretty bored with Iwappara.

The one run from the top back down to the middle section is fun- particularly since it was full of so much snow... but the rest of the resort is very, very flat and wide. There was also a huge line for the gondola, which was tiring. None of the other lifts are covered and they seem painfully slow - so we were freezing to death (it

Naeba review by Bobo
Still getting those early winter "snow dumps"... awesome powder! I've been here before and I can definitely vouch for the mountain...it is awesome.

Recommend going on a weekday though, because it gets extremely crowded on the weekends. Not much off-piste action today just because of the massive depth of the snow. Visibility was poor today because of the foggy/snowy conditions, but don't let that discourage you because this resort is one of the better (best?) resorts in

Naeba is very popular and with good reason...its a great resort.

Sunday was no exception. There were quite a number of people on the mountain but there is always enough room to manouver around them so it doesnt really matter. There were no lift lines which was good.

We took the valley almost directly under the top of Gondala number 1 for a bit of backcontry. My friend got caught in a 6 foot deep snow hole and was lucky to get

Ishiuchi Maruyama review by ronaldinho's grin
This review is basically for night skiing, since I've only been during the day once or twice, which had its moments in its own right... from what I hear, this is THE place for skiing/boarding under the lights for the region, certainly anywhere in Niigata.

They've got the most terrain open for night skiing of any resort in the area. Parking is free from 4 pm, the slopes open for dark at 5pm, and the lift ticket is only 2,500 yen.

Joetsu Kokusai review by Bobo
Joetsu was great today.

The only drawback was the constant heavy snowfall and the fog which made for some pretty bad visibility. Of course if my damn goggles didn't fog up it might have been a little better. The powder was awesome!!! Good variety of trails...not too many off-piste that I saw, but I'm sure they were hiding in there somewhere.

Had a decent snowboard park/run. Several different rails and a decent table top...my left
