Kandatsu Kogen review by mogski
Kandatsu's claim to fame is having the steepest terrain in Niigata. Well, it's steep but not too steep (supposedly 37 degrees) and it is pretty short at about 300m or so and right at the top.. On a good snow day the powder up there is good, but any other time and like all other slopes in Japan of this degree it starts to get bumps the size of some small resorts. Kandatsu is relatively small in

Naeba review by landon
We rushed off last Saturday (Nov 23rd) trying to find some early snow in Kagura/Mitsumata.

Apparently the whole of Tokyo had the same idea. We've never seen the place so crowded. The car park was completely full by 8:30am and we were turned away and told to try Naeba. Only 2 bunny runs open there. The bottom one was manmade snow which quickly turned sticky with so many people . Natural snow on the higher run but enormous lift

GALA, like other people have said, people tend to either love it or hate it.

It really depends on when you go there. Go after some good snow (and it does get good snow), on a weekday when there's not many people there and it can be a great day out.

Go on a crowded weekend with less-than-best snow and it can suck.

Makes you choice

I went there last weekend, good variety of courses and the couches in the hotel gave me a quality rest like no other.

Naeba review (submitted before 2003)
There seems to be wildly different opinions on Naeba here, which is cool, but I thought I should write about my experiences.

I usually go out skiing on a weekday - luckily my job allows me to do that. I have never had to wait for a lift more than 5 minutes in the 10-12 times I have been to Naeba.....and most of the time getting straight on a lift without waiting.

So it seems weekends are busy and weekdays are

One of the less well known (?) or talked about resorts in the Myoko region of Niigata Prefecture, but we really like it.

It's not as big as it's neighbors, but has a few good courses good facilities.

Good for a day out when you have had your fill of Suginohara, Ikenotaira, ARAI etc.

Hmmm if you get tired of Naeba, you can always go to tashiro, kagura, and mitsumata side....take that new gondola. I will base my review from my experience in March of this year.

There are not that many challenging runs here. If there are, it will intersect some of the beginner paths (which really sucks)....yeah I guess you can say I took someone out...so if I hit you and you are reading this...sorry.

Getting from Kagura to Naeba can take

Yuzawa Nakazato review (submitted before 2003)
This is by no means the best place in Yuzawa town.

Naeba, GALA, Kagura, Kandatsu, Iwappara all beat it it in terms of size, courses, snow. But having said that I still have a soft spot for this small resort. Probably becoz it is where I learnt where to ski way back 7 years ago. Since then I have become an above-average skier and recently also taken up snowboarding, which I am really enjoying this season.

Nakazato is good for beginners

Struggling to understand how the readers have voted this place an 8.0 out of 10. The facilities and scenery etc are great but if your going purely for the skiing, then Ifound it disappointing. Yes it covers a lot of area but you couldn't really call it challenging. Good day out all the same though with the easy access from Tokyo. Shame the season seems to be ending early though?!

This place is just so convenient, and great snow too when I was there. On a weekday it is not busy at all and highly recommended.

The left hand side of the resort provides some real challenges and should only be sampled by confident skiers or boarders.

From the top of the resort on a blue sky day - you are rewarded with some magnificent views of the surrounding area.

Yuzawa Park review (submitted before 2003)
A few years ago, Yuzawa Park quickly became a very popular resort for snowboarders, allowing them on all of its slopes a little earlier than other resorts did.

A pretty resort set opposite the larger Iwappara, Yuzawa Park is still quite popular and provides some decent, if not short, slopes to get some practice in, in nice surroundings. Easier slopes predominate, with the "Family" course being one of the more popular, with its 14 degree maximum slope.

Great for snowboarders.

Almost no skiers here. Really good beginner runs.

Not so many intermediates. The ones I tried were nearer to "expert". Rental is kind of expensive, but there are lots of English speaking staff.

Free shuttle buses go from Yuzawa station.

Lots of good places to stay in Yuzawa.
