Naeba would have to be the most commercialised resorts I have ever been too. It is not necessarily overrated in terms of a resort with a few good runs, but night life leaves a lot to be desired and the term "resort" has to have been penned at Naeba.

Naeba has some nice steeps up the top part of the mountain that can be good on the rare days that it is not clouded up there and you can see

For simple convience this place was great, you are right on the foot of the slopes and there are enough lifts to get you where you want to go.

The food ranges from macdonalds to full on too expensive for my taste cuisine and from what I can remember there is also some outlet sport shops to pick up the odds and which you forgot. This year I think they have also addd an onsen to soak those tired limbs

HOW TO ENJOY NAEBA:

Like all major resorts in Japan, don't go on a weekend or major holiday. Once you have decided on going on a Monday or Tuesday, prepare for an excellent time at this big resort in Niigata Prefecture. Easy to get to, big choice of runs, good choice for both skiers and boarders, good snow (usually) and a good vibe about the place. Hey, this is Naeba!

HOW NOT TO ENJOY NAEBA:

Go on a crowded weekend and you may

Naeba must have a policy of blocking every imagineable treeline or jumps, or something. With the exception of a recent snowboard fun course, they block everything else.

They seem to want everyone to go directly down the hill and have no good terrain to hit (I'm speaking from a snowboarder's POV). Also what's the deal with having a halfpipe that no one can ride? They want us to trek over to Asagaia and pay 1,000 yen for 1/2 pipe action.

Large resort, with many runs, but icy snow at times.

Way too many people and very dangerous.

Lots of stuff was roped off which really cramped up the slopes. Great food, but just watch out for the beginners

Always thought Naeba wasn't that great (having visited twice before) - The slope always seems to force you into spending ages on either your toes or your heals (snowboarders:-) )- top mogels and a decent slope. However the Prince hotel - no matter how famous it is - is over priced and relatively shabby considering how much you're paying.

However this view point all changed recently when I went and stayed at a nearby minshuku (sorry can't remember the name),

Huge resort with a range of slopes for everyone. Very busy most of the season so be prepared for long queues. Good off-piste off the back of the mountain. Nice black diamond runs as well.

I went 29 Jan, 02 and it was the only resort open in the bad weather in the area. However, by 3pm only 2 lifts were operating. Better than nothing!

This is a very underrated resort because it is close. I like it because of the variety of slopes and the availability of good food in all parts of the park.

It now has a new gondola to Tashiro which added to the Asagai option, make it the best all around resort area in Japan.

This is a great weekend get away.

Close to Tokyo, resonable packages deals and slopes for all skill levels.

Very little crowding at this under rated resort makes it one of the best places to get away to.

What makes for a rippin' time at the mountains?

Fresh powder, cute fillies and uncrouded lifts. Our first rage at Naeba offered all three. Knocked back a clod on and chatted up the local tallent on the world's longest ropeway, the Dragondola, which could also be refered to as the bongdolla, if you get the drift. Kagura offered better quality snow, and even less crowded slopes.

Compared to the nasty ice of the US East Coast, my home stomping grounds, this place
