Otaru Tenguyama
Otaru City, Hokkaido
Submitted by agillgren on 28th February 2014
It's literally on the edge of town and offers great views back over the city and ocean. It has some decent pitch too. Probably some of the steeper "courses" I've seen in Hokkiado.

But alas not that long with only around 450m vertical. In fact I think true "beginners" would struggle on the green run accessed by the rope way - but the area at the top accessed by chair is a perfect pitch but might get a bit

Asarigawa Onsen
Otaru City, Hokkaido
Submitted by agillgren on 28th February 2014
Otaru local
A smallish resort - this time just outside of Otaru (10 minutes).

There was fresh snow on the day we visited, and not the greatest weather. Good thing is we seemed to be a bit out of the wind. Being low and close to the ocean the powder wasn't as fluffy as other places but still good. Looked like they get plenty of it still.

It's got 4 lifts - although it takes 3 to get to the top.

Asahidake Ropeway
Higashigawa Town, Hokkaido
Submitted by agillgren on 28th February 2014
Stunning day on the volcano
We are more easy slack country riders more than full back country types so I was a bit hesitant to head to Asahidake.

We failed in our attempts to find a guide ---- but with a gorgeous bluebird day and no wind we decided to give it a shot. The views alone were pretty worth it - quite stunning up there.

Although "tall" the ropeway doesn't cover a lot of vertical so the runs aren't long. It had been

Kita Shiga Komaruyama

Wide, beginner friendly area; atrocious lift/ski time ratio
I'm not surprised that I'm the first to review Komaruyama. It’s a bit out of the way (especially if coming from Tokyo), and your time and money will probably be better spent down the street over at Ryuoo.

That said, Komaruyama is quite beginner friendly. The bunny run is wide and at a gentle slope. Intermediates and above, however, will get bored pretty quickly. The harder runs are way too short, and the lift/ride time ratio, as implied in the headline,

White World Oze Iwakura
Katashina Village, Gunma
Submitted by Gunma Boarder on 25th February 2014
A nice resort not yet discovered by the international crowd
White World Oze Iwakura is a nice ski resort which is popular with Japanese people but not yet discovered by the overseas crowd.

It is a good sized hill with a lot of variety. Though the bottom of the hill is flat enough for beginners, I would say Iwakura is more of an intermediate to advanced skijo. Though I am a snowboarder and have had some great days there I would say Iwakura caters more to skiers especially the mogul

Hyperbowl Tohachi

Great skiing in Hyogo
I've been to Hyperbowl twice now, both times the day after a big dump of snow, and both times as part of a visit to Sky Valley. Once was nice and sunny, the other snowing with nil to little visibility. Both times it was a great resort to be at.

Hyperbowl and Sky Valley share a lift ticket, and the mountain. At the top of the mountain there is a rope in one place separating the two resorts, but most of

Great Skiing in Hyogo
I've been to Sky Valley twice now, both times the day after a big dump of snow. Once was nice and sunny, the other snowing with nil to little visibility. Both times it was a great resort to be at.

The base at Sky Valley is situated in a very narrow valley, to reach the lower lifts you have to walk though the base building. It's a two story building bottom floor has two changing rooms (male and female), rental area,

Tomi City, Nagano

A fun little resort
A nice little local resort. For people in the area it is a good place for a midweek day off or families at the weekend.

Compared with nearby Asama 2000 this resort is excellent but it can't compete with the Northern Nagano giants.

It is rather small but the snow is usually fairly soft (most likely due to the high altitude and low temps rather than frequent top ups.)

At the start of the season in mid to late November the place can

Asama 2000 Park
Komoro City, Nagano
Submitted by robobin on 18th February 2014
Don't Bother
Eastern Nagano resorts are sadly pretty poor for snow.

Even those up at 2000m get very little, and what does fall is usually blown off by the strong winds.

This is one of my local resorts but there is little reason to visit. Local skiers come here in late Autumn for some early practice but all the snow is machine made and unpleasant to ride on.

If you REALLY need to ski/board while in the area I'd recommend Sugadaira or Yunomaru nearby

Hakuba Cortina
Otari Village, Nagano
Submitted by michellemabelle on 16th February 2014
The best in Hakuba!
We were so impressed with Cortina because they are a lot less restrictive on where you can ride. You can ride all through the trees.

Other resorts we have been to in Hakuba area do not let you and take your pass off you if caught, we met plenty of people who had endured this at some point. It was nice to be able to ride all over the place in Cortina and not worry about ski patrol.

Also they

Yomase Onsen
Yamanouchi Town, Nagano
Submitted by Kansaiash on 13th February 2014
Sorry this run is closed for private use.
This was my first time to visit Yomase Onsen.

On the first day I had an enjoyable time. The quad is fast and there was no long queues.

Some of the courses were closed for club slalom practice but only about 2/5th of the courses so there was still plenty of places to slide. However on the third day over half or even close to three quartets of the runs were closed for slalom practice. Everyone

Nozawa Onsen

Great place, not so good snow this year
I like Nozawa, both the skijo and the village.
It's a great place and I have heard that it gets great snow.
But this season it seems be missing out on that and being very average.
None of that full-on for a week kind of snowfall that previous seasons have delivered.

It was almost spring like when I went, early February.
I won't go on about the snow. It just wasn't good.

I like the mountain though especially the top area

Ninox Snow Park
Shibata City, Niigata
Submitted by u-tan on 11th February 2014
I saw a Kamoshika!
I noticed the reviews on here are pretty old and since SnowJapan was nice enough to send me two free tickets I decided to write this review.

Ninox is close to Shibata city and is probably the closest ski place to Niigata City.

It is on the west facing side of the mountains and gets a lot of snow. The storms that blow in across the sea from Russia dump a lot of snow on the slopes. Ninox is usually

GALA Yuzawa

A Gala day for sure
First of all thanks to SnowJapan and GALA for the ticket from the Giveaway.

The review is totally honest though. Luckily I had a great day!

On advice of lots of people, I went on a weekday. One of the things I had heard was that weekends can be very busy and Gala isn't the best when busy due to fairly narrow runs.

It was a good idea.

After a snowfall so the snow was really nice.

Niseko Village Ski Resort

Spectacular views from Niseko
I was expecting to have a deep powder experience during my first ski trip to Hokkaido, but little snow fell during my 4 day visit. It's kind of ironic that Kanto got walloped while I was up north. Nevertheless, the snow was good and the weather mostly clear.

The scenery was great. Ezo Fuji is a gorgeous volcano and the plume of steam rising from Showa Unzen was clearly visible, as was the Sea of Japan.

The high speed triple
