Hakuba Cortina
Otari Village, Nagano

Loved it!
I'd heard a lot about Cortina and am probably writing a slightly biased review as it was our only powder day out of 7, however I loved it here.

We'd had rain, ice and spring like conditions at Happo One, 47/Goryu and Tsugaike on the other 6 days. We woke up to snow on Feb 17, which also happened to be my birthday. We made the treck to Cortina from Wadano at Happo One (2 buses) and

No lines, great snow.
Great for intermediates.

Advanced skiers have two slopes all to themselves.

Trick spots (whatever you call them) for boarders – rails, jumps, etc.

Almost always empty, especially midweek.

Restaurant is OK.

Shiga Kogen Yakebitaiyama
志賀高原 焼額山
Yamanouchi Town, Nagano

Well equipped and fairly diverse.
Yakebitaiyama is one of the larger Shiga Kogen areas and one of the better equipped. It's run by Prince so there's a bit more money behind than some of the other areas.

The resort is fairly well laid out and good for skiers and snowboarders since there wasn't all that much walking required. There aren't many lifts though. The two gondolas are the main ways of getting around the mountain and they do a good job when it isn't too busy.

Perfect powder for endless tree skiing
Before visiting Niseko I'd read a lot about their snow fall and the quality of the snow and our visit didn't disappoint (and this is meant to be a below par season)!

We had close to a metre and a half of snow fall during our stay leading to some amazing days on the hill. I've been lucky enough to ski across a number of countries and this was hands down the best snow I've seen.

The four mountains provide good

Niseko HANAZONO Resort

Thanks guys
Thank you to SnowJapan and HPG Hanazono Powder Guide for the prize of guiding for a day at Niseko.

Myself and my companions from The Old Farts Militia have been coming to Niseko for the past three years and have experienced the powder and tree skiing within the resort however we recognised we had neither the equipment or the experience to go out of bounds and experience the back country. That’s where Peter our guide came in.

After some test

Grandeco Snow Resort
Kita Shiobara Village, Fukushima
Submitted by Mick Rich on 5th February 2016
Let's Grandeco!
My previous Fukushima ski-jo experience was an enjoyable daytrip to Inawashiro in 2013 [], so assisted by the new-for-2016 Grandeco Daily Reports, I decided to head further up the road to the Ura Bandai area where Grandeco ski resort is situated. Despite safety concerns (following a fatal crash in Nagano), I took an overnight ski bus leaving from Tokyo, and costing 8,400Yen including lift pass. Thankfully the journey from Shinjuku was drama-free and in exactly the reverse order from my

Let's Iwappara
Today I spent 4+ hours at Iwappara in Yuzawa.

Almost all of that time was spend exclusively at the top area and using just the top quad lift.

I can see why people say that Iwappara is perfect for beginners... it is. That many wide area in the middle of the resort I would say is about as good as you can get to learn on. Wide and gentle.

I quickly made my way up to the top quad and as I said

Shiga Kogen Yakebitaiyama

A bit of a let down...
Thanks to another year of SJ giveaways, my buddy 'Neck' and I won lift tickets to Yakebitayama, one of the bigger and more popular resorts in the Shiga Kogen area.

Now, I go up to Shiga Kogen fairly often each season, but never to Yakebitai. Mainly due to the fact I can count on awesome off-piste terrain at other areas, and it's such a mission to drive up there sometimes I'd rather have a guaranteed good day than search out

High but flat
I was lucky enough to win a ticket for Yakebitaiyama from one of the amazing SnowJapan giveaways. Thanks! I decided to make use of the ticket almost as soon as it arrived. The forecast was for significant snowfall up in Shiga that coming weekend, so I planned a Saturday trip up there with my partner in crime, 'Bushiman'.

I have previously held a season pass for the entire Shiga area for a few seasons. I really like the area as it
