In terms of snow quality/food I'll give this area a 5*. 2 things prompt me to mark it down to 4*. With snow falling all the time, and the occasional strong wind, visibility is not terribly good. Out of the 3 days we were there, I think we've seen no more than 20 min. of the sun and that is very different from west coast North America.

Seems this is the norm for Hokkaido winter as I have been monitoring the weather for a month before this trip.

The 2nd thing is skiing between the 3 resorts has not been easy. The only easy way to cross is from the peak but lifts to the peak are often closed (not open for night ski anyway) and there are no easy runs from the peak - most are black which is OK for me but I've got 2 weaker skiers in the group. So we ended up having to do a fair bit of walking (uphill in knee high snow!) when we crossed from Higashiyama to Hirafu. The other alternative will be to take the ski bus...

We skied for 2 whole days. In the evening, we'd switch to snowboard and the 3rd day we did a whole day of snowboarding. We thoroughly enjoyed the trip and are currently thinking of doing another trip to Hokkaido in March....
Date visited: From January, 2005
Snow condition on visit: Awesome dry powder
Things I liked: Unbeatable snow
Things I didn't like: Connectivity between resorts
