Muikamachi Ski Resort review by Crunky Muncher
I'm giving Minami a 3. It was a solid resort with some good slopes, but not enough variety.

But for all that it was a great place to start the season. Blue skies all day on Saturday led to icy conditions on a slightly (in my opinion) over-groomed course. But the lack of people there meant we had the place to ourselves. There was no waiting at lifts, no congestion at the top, and plenty of space on the slopes.

The topmost lifts were not running, which meant we could not get to the top runs, but we spent Saturday getting into form and Sunday buried in powder.

The top-most lift we were able to use gave us access to three runs. The three slopes run parallel to each other with two of them being to either side of the lift and the third being accessed by some sly (and slightly off-course) riding. It was the slope we spent the most time on as it was hard to get to (on Sunday because of the powder) and as a result we had virgin powder to ourselves every run). It snowed so hard that our tracks were gone by the time we got back up to take the run again.

That run goes down beside some trees and ends up at the beginners slope.

All three slopes connect together into one enormous run, eventually running down the mountain to two further runs (an intermediate run and a beginner's run). The beginner's run was the more interesting of the two because it had a few corners and some drop-offs that you could play on. The intermediate was really just a steep slope that seemed more popular with the skiers than the boarders. The beginner slope got more interesting as the powder piled up.

I would recommend Minami to beginners or intermediate boarders looking for somewhere with great snow where they can practice without fear of getting wiped out. (There was a lot of instruction going on on the beginner slope, both ski and board, which was good to see. It did not interfere with the rest of the slopes so I felt it was particularly suitable for learners.)

If you have a bit more experience, I suggest somewhere else, unless you really want to be left in peace and want to carve without waiting for lines. In that case, Minami might just be for you.
Date visited: From 2006
Snow condition on visit: Sat=icy (overgroomed) Sun=Massive Powder
Things I liked: Good for beginners, fairly empty, no lift lines, patrol is not strict
Things I didn't like: Lack of variety of runs, not much off-course despite easy-going ski patrol
