First off a big thank you to Kandatsu Resort and SnowJapan for the free pass. The free pass meant I went to Kandatsu, the great day we had there means I'll return.
Kandatsu is easy to get too, the entrance road is very close to the Yuzawa IC on the dreaded Kan-etsu expressway. It was quite busy the day we were there and we were directed off to a secondary carpark. If you are driving and have a 2WD avoid this carpark, it's unsealed and I saw a couple of cars get stuck. (this carpark is on the left heading towards the base, up a short hill)
The main resort base is in a distinctive building, Lego like according to some. For a list of facilities SnowJapan have done a much better job than I could here: http://www.snowjapan.com/japan-ski-resorts/kandatsu-kogen
As the weather was very spring like the snow wasn't that good, however there was still a lot of fun to be had. Once up the lower lifts into the resort proper you are in a half bowel like area, with lifts heading up the hills to your left. With the exception of the far left run, all the runs funnel down to pretty much the same area. It's unfortunate that the resort hasn't expanded, the hills to the right of the "bowel area" look ripe for a couple of lifts.
All levels of skiers are catered for here, although the more advanced tree riding, powder seeking boarders/skiers may find the options a bit limited. There were rideable trees skiers left of the Shiraitayama pair lift, and from tracks in the snow it appeared that it was possible to head down to the main base though trees off the right of the Milky Way run.
The Onakadaira quad lift gives access to the large beginners slope, and also to a park area, both these areas were busy, which led to long lift lines. However the Onakadaira quad lift was the only one with lines, the other two quads and the pair had no lines at all. So despite the large number of people there it wasn't that busy.
All in all a nice resort with some good terrain to play in. Advanced skiers/boarders may want to come after a big dump of snow, others will find enough to enjoy what ever the weather.
From 22 February, 2015 To 22 February, 2015
Snow condition on visit:
Very spring like, most hard and icy, with some patches of heavy, wet powder
Things I liked:
Runs funneling to same area. With one lift exception, no lift lines on a busy Sunday. Easy to get too
Things I didn't like:
Secondary carpark. Queue for tickets (was the longest of the day)
