My friend and I had a great time at Kiroro for a day trip. We were staying near Niseko and it was about an hours drive to get there. It was great to get away from the crowds around Hirafu. The drive was easy, even with some freezing rain on the roads.
Once we got there, we were told that the gondola was closed for the day because of the weather (moderate to high winds in particular). This was disappointing, as it reduced the terrain potential by about half, but we decided to continue anyways.
It snowed about 5 to 10 cm overnight but temperatures were near-zero, so it was heavy. Further, it was still freezing rain a bit in the morning, covering everything with a thin layer of ice. This only lightly affected the snow quality, as it was breakable.
The runs themselves were mostly groomed and cruisy. The terrain without the gondola open is good for beginners and intermediates but less so for advanced skiers. There are no steep runs off the other chairs. We were forced to find our own terrain off-piste. We brought our full avalanche equipment setup, including skins, so we were able to find some excellent steeper terrain off the sides of the highest chair.
Overall, we had a good day of skiing. The resort itself is worth a visit for people around Sapporo or Niseko. The only accommodation there looked to be large hotels so I think a day trip would be the way to go. Apres possibilities looked limited.
