Matsudai Family review (submitted before 2003)
I went to Matsudai Family on a Monday recently, which was a national holiday in Japan.

This place is very close to the Matsudai Rail Station on the Hokuhoku line, one stop away from Tokamachi. If you have no care, a cab ride is about 700 yen from the rail station. For a ski resort it seemed relatively uncrowded. Being a relative beginner, I found their beginner course fun and interesting This is a small place with only two lifts.

I would recommend it for beginners who have gone a few times already - the course is fun without being scary. They do have a ski school, and I think they said they also have snowboard instruction sometimes, but nobody there can speak English. Therefore if you speak only English I'd recommend going there to practice. They do have some intermediate and advanced trails, but probably nothing that would measure up to other ski areas. For beginners, though, (those who have gone a couple times), it's perfect.

The snow was a bit icy when I was there, but I heard that was a problem throughout the region at that time, so that is probably not normal.
