A wonderful experience |
I loved every minute of my stay, not just at Niseko Grand Hirafu, but also Annupuri, Sapporo City and Sapporo Teine Olympia. As mentioned above, the snow was great, skiing was great, the wait for the lifts was never longer than 10 minutes, the hotel was wonderful, food, service, and most importantly the people, everything about my stay was just unreal. When it comes to the equipment hire, I could very well have been at Thredbo or Perisher or any |

Consistency of snowfall is hard to beat |
Niseko might be mad popular but the snow really is fantastic. You can just see by how consistent it is - it's relentless. Being so good though does mean that it gets super busy - and many complain about it not being very "Japan". If you're all about the snow though, I would highly recommend at least one visit |

Snow...snow...and more snow |
Day 3 of son trip (took a down day in Sapporo...check out the beer museum).
We bought the Hanazono only pass and were not disappointed. Similar to my previous Niseko trip, I don't think we saw the sun. The snow would let up a bit, then start again. Tracks on groomers would fill in after a few hours. All that is fine - we came for powder. We did laps under the upper quad chair, and when the |

Great Resort |
We were lucky to have very light snowfall during our visit there in March (-4 cm per day), but it wasn't enough to refresh the slopes overnight. Snow was also icy instead of powder, but we were there in Spring, so even having snowfall was a fortunate blessing indeed.
I am a beginner skier, so kept mainly to the green slopes such as Kogen & Family. With the snow conditions as it was, it was a challenge to me but it |

Perfect powder for endless tree skiing |
Before visiting Niseko I'd read a lot about their snow fall and the quality of the snow and our visit didn't disappoint (and this is meant to be a below par season)!
We had close to a metre and a half of snow fall during our stay leading to some amazing days on the hill. I've been lucky enough to ski across a number of countries and this was hands down the best snow I've seen.
The four mountains provide good |

Thanks guys |
Thank you to SnowJapan and HPG Hanazono Powder Guide for the prize of guiding for a day at Niseko.
Myself and my companions from The Old Farts Militia have been coming to Niseko for the past three years and have experienced the powder and tree skiing within the resort however we recognised we had neither the equipment or the experience to go out of bounds and experience the back country. That’s where Peter our guide came in.
After some test |

A unique experience, loved every minute of it! |
Let's start at the beginning, we flew from Amsterdam to Tokyo first and stayed there for two days to see something of the city. Loved every minute of it, from the patchinko halls to a standing bar where we had "cloudy sake" with the locals. Brilliant :)
From Tokyo we did an overland to Niseko, we started with a Shinkansen bullet train which was a unique experience. Gradually the trains got smaller and the heaps of snow got larger. The past |

Tracked out in record time |
I have been snowboarding in Niseko since 1999 and have spent the past 5 seasons (Jan & Feb) there.
The snowfall is amazing but so are the crowds. The point of chasing powder is to ride it when it is fresh and untracked....this is becoming increasingly difficult at all 4 Niseko united resorts and Moiwa. The crowds have stomped on every bit of untracked powder across all resorts by approximately 10.30am. After 5 seasons I know the resorts and the |

Great Snow |
Hanazano was great fun!
Had powder both days we were there, and the gates opened both days too.
Excellent runs form the top via gates 3 and 4.
Bit crowded on the better of the powder mornings, so things tracked out quickly |

Dry/wet spell |
Niseko is excellent.... when the snow is great.
It needs those snow conditions though - more than other places, I think.
Let me explain.
Places like the 'other famous places' on Honshu have a lot to offer and it isn't just all about the snow. Steep terrain, lots of different resorts in a small area, not mad crazy cold temperatures, lots of cultural attractions nearby, monkeys soaking in onsen.... that kind of thing.
Niseko, I feel, is all about the snow... |

Powder Kingdom |
This was my third year visiting Niseko and everytime I come here there is always something new to experience. I was lucky enough to win an all mountain day pass through the SnowJapan prize draw which I put to good use!
Resorts:
The mountain is split into 4 resorts from left to right: Annupuri, Niseko Village, Grand Hirafu and Hanazono. Purchasing an all mountain pass will allow you access to all 4 resorts. There is also a smaller less frequented resort called Moiwa |

First weekend of the season |
Two weeks late but we can forgive Niseko that.
Snow conditions were pretty good over the opening weekend, though not mid-season great. Not that you would probably expect that in the first half of Niseko.
Still quiet before the hordes arrive, so I am hoping for some more snow to allow the mountain to fully open before it gets too busy.
Peak season Niseko is too busy for my liking so it's an early and late season place for me. |
