Numajiri is located on the western slopes of Mt Adatara in Fukushima Prefecture. This ski hill holds claim to a few records. It is apparently the oldest currently operating ski area in Japan (since 1915). It saw the installation of the first mechanical lift (in 1927) and it was the first to open for night operations in 1927.
The mascot characters for Numajiri are very friendly looking squirrels who can often be found on the slopes. Their names are Numajirisu and Nuuji - we believe they are a couple.
Fukushima Prefecture is composed of three main regions - the Hamadori region to the east (including the Pacific Ocean coastline), the Nakadori region (the central area) and the Aizu region (the Western mountainous region). Many of the ski and snowboard resorts in the prefecture are found on or near Mt Bandai and Mt Adatara to the north of Lake Inawashiro. Most of the others can be found scattered across the western region of the Aizu region or to the south-west of Lake Inawashiro.
Ski and snowboard lessons are available at Numajiri.
