Kandatsu Snow Resort is a popular ski area located in the Kandatsu area of Yuzawa Town in Niigata Prefecture. It is positioned in a natural bowl area to the south of the central town area. It often enjoys heavy snowfall, particularly considering the relatively low elevation. The entrance is just over 1km from the Yuzawa IC exit of the Kanetsu Expressway. There are also regular shuttle buses from Echigo Yuzawa Station to the ski area.
Kandatsu Snow Resort first opened in 1986 and was initially known as ‘Kandatsu Kogen’. Over the years, this ski area has had a few different names and ownership changes. In 2004 it was known as ‘Pine Ridge Resorts Kandatsu’ but reverted to being just Kandatsu Kogen again from 2009. There was some drama when it closed for the whole of the 2013-2014 season. Things have been smoother since then. Since late 2019 it once again re-branded to the new name ‘Kandatsu Snow Resort’, and there were also some facility renovations.
Yuzawa town and neighbouring Minamiuonuma city are home to over 20 individual ski areas, including some of the most well-known in Japan. With easy and quick access by train and road and a wide choice in a relatively compact area, this region is one of Japan's most popular ski destinations. The region usually enjoys very heavy and consistent snowfall each winter. Yuzawa town is known as being the inspiration for the famous Nobel prize-winning novel Yukiguni (Snow Country).
